Description: Deltares has developed a powerful modeling package called Delft3D Flexible Mesh (Delft3D FM), focused primarily on coastal, river, estuary, and urban environments.
The Delft3D Flexible Mesh (Delft3D FM) Suite is a further development of the Delft3D 4.xx Suite of structured numerical models developed by the Deltares Research Institute, the Netherlands. With the Delft3D FM Suite, you can simulate storm surges, hurricanes, tsunamis, detailed currents and changes in water level, sea waves, sediment transport and bottom lithodynamics, water quality and ecology, as well as interactions between these processes. The package is designed for use by subject matter experts and non-experts alike, from consultants, contractors and engineers, to regulators and government agencies that are involved in the relevant phases of water resources design and management.
A key component of Delft3D FM is the D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) engine, which is designed for fluid dynamics modeling on unstructured meshes in 1D, 2D and 3D. D-Flow FM is the successor to the Delft3D-FLOW and SOBEK-FLOW engines. The program was developed by the Deltares Institute as a result of a five-year research project funded by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment.
Some areas of application:
• Tidal and wind currents;
• Drainage and flooding of tidal zones;
• Density currents caused by density gradients due to uneven distribution of temperature and salinity concentrations;
• Horizontal transport of substances on a large and small scale;
• Hydrodynamic impact of engineering works such as land reclamation, construction of breakwaters and dams;
• Thermal recirculation of cooling water discharges from power plants.
Some of the key features of Delft3D FM:
• The package provides direct access to the latest technological knowledge accumulated and developed in one of the world’s most renowned hydraulic institutes;
• The graphical user interface (GUI) is one of the most user-friendly on the market: the central program window contains a map with a spatial editor; various program windows can be customized, docked and undocked; it is possible to connect to online databases; it is possible to batch run models using scripts written in Python.
• All modules of the package demonstrate a high degree of integration and information compatibility.
