Description: Cadence has announced a new thermal analysis software, Celsius Thermal Solver. This simulator uses finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to detect overheating in ICs, PCBs, and device packages, taking into account heat generation, heat transfer, and convection heat transfer. Celsius obtains complete package design and PCB layout information from CAD tools, including Cadence Allegro or OrCAD PCB CAD designs. Moreover, Celsius can obtain information about the detailed design of the chip itself when it comes to analyzing heat dissipation and heating inside its package. This functionality may be of interest to domestic developers of processor chips who use Cadence CAD for designing VLSI chips and chip packages/wafers (CAD for developing substrates Cadence Allegro Package Designer/System In Package is an extended version of Cadence Allegro PCB Designer CAD for printed circuit boards). The Celsius simulator easily integrates into Cadence electronics design software. Component topology and PCB geometric parameters are read from native Cadence files. Neutral file formats, such as STEP, are used to represent the geometric parameters of a three-dimensional device design, as well as three-dimensional objects on printed circuit boards and components. Thus, Celsius provides additional convenience to CAD users by decoupling system geometric parameters from the current design topology: if design parameters change, the designer does not need to reload the board layout data. Celsius performs simulations based on time-dependent heat dissipation patterns, such as electrical current, or timing, ramping, and power profiles that can be obtained from electronic design software. The ability to quickly determine the electrical resistance of objects and the power dissipated on them, easily and simply carry out thermal analysis, and also take into account the detailed geometry of objects and their physical location ensures accurate modeling results.
