Serif Affinity Photo 2.6.2.3228 is a British photo editor that’s similar to Photoshop and Corel PaintShop Pro. It’s also a good alternative to simple, free photo organization software, with an extensive set of tools for image retouching, photo merging for panoramas, HDR effect creation, and basic digital design .

Serif Affinity Photo works perfectly on its own and is about the closest direct alternative to Photoshop on the market. Like Photoshop, it’s designed for complex, detailed, and advanced image editing, although it can also be used for relatively quick and simple enhancements.
Keep in mind that Affinity Photo is a full-fledged design tool, not just a photo editor. It’s very similar to Photoshop in that regard, so while both are pretty much the most powerful in-depth photo manipulation tools you can get, that’s not all they do.
Affinity Photo supports vector graphics for creating images and type layers for adding text. It’s clear that the design community is where most of Affinity’s focus lies.
Modern user interface
The Serif Affinity Photo interface is divided into separate workspaces called personas. This means you’ll only see icons relevant to what you’re working with. Like Photoshop, the interface has a toolbar on the left, a top panel and context toolbar at the top, and all the relevant panels on the right. There are 25 panels that you can add as you like. One useful feature that Affinity offers is the Assistant button. It appears at the top of the interface as a tuxedo icon. When you click it, you can create presets for specific tools. For example, you can set it so that when you click the Brush tool, the Assistant automatically optimizes and applies the layer type.
Photo editing workflow
This is a photo that took about 30 minutes to edit in Affinity Photo. The Affinity Photo editor cannot be a full replacement like Capture One Pro, as it is not intended for integrated system organizations.
You can view image files on your computer, but there’s no advanced image search functionality or rating system. This means you’ll spend more time searching for a specific image using Affinity Photo.

Serif Affinity Photo offers non-destructive photo editing, RAW processing, and real-time tools. All of this makes the image editor very useful for photographers. The most unusual feature that is often discussed on the Affinity Photo forum is the ability to split image post production into personas.
Each of them is responsible for its own set of functions and allows you not to overload the interface. There are four of them:
Photo Persona – Basic tools for image editing.
Liquify Persona – Allows you to modify the image grid using tools specifically designed for liquid transformations.
Develop Persona – Opens by default when processing RAW image files and can be modified from raster layers. It includes tools that allow users to customize the tone and overall look of the image.

Develop Persona
The Develop Persona photo editor in Affinity Photo has all the exposure and lens correction settings we’ve come to expect in the “Basic”, “Lens”, “Details”, “Tones” and “Overlays” panels. Exposure, vibrance, shadows and glare, cleaning, sharpening. It’s all there and more.
You can save a set of changes to a profile for faster photo editing, and then apply the profile with one click.
To control any exposure adjustments in the free Affinity Photo Photoshop alternative, you can use the highlight/shadow cropping and highlight functions that add any tonal nuances to the image. Persona photo
By default, image editing is done non-destructively via adjustment layers. Each layer can be selected, removed, and deleted individually, or locked as a group for further editing of the photo. I find this method more intuitive than making changes using the Story panel.
In the case of Affinity Photo Persona, you’ll have access to a combination of tabbed panels on the right side of the image editor window. The top tab shows a histogram, color palettes, patterns and brushes, curves, LUTs, and gradients. The bottom panel contains an image navigator and sections for “Channels,” “Transform,” and “History.”
Typically, in this case, everything is done automatically, including white balance, contrast, and other settings. However, you can always correct everything manually in the right panel of the photo editor. The “Adjust” panel contains most of your edits, from levels and curves to vibrancy and HSL (hue, saturation, lightness). When you click on one, it is added as a new adjustment layer with a pop-up window containing controls for adjustment.
Look at the filters. Serif Affinity Photo includes a lot of filters for creating effects like blur, distortion, noise, etc. that are applied to a pixel layer while changing the pixels on that layer (destructive editing). Many of these filters are available as Live Filter layers, which act as adjustment layers. This means you can make independent changes and reconfigure them later.
Liquefy & Tone Mapping Personas
All Affinity Photo reviews state that Liquefy is a powerful tool that lets you stretch and transform an image with any style of transformation. The grid is superimposed to show the base shape used. Tone Mapping is like an HDR tool with lots of presets that can be applied directly to an image.
Liquefy and Tone Mapping Personas are very effective. This means you will spend less time using these tools. Not many photographers use them every day, however, you need to be very gentle and careful with these tools to avoid unnatural faces.
Advanced selection tools
Affinity Photo’s selection tools are fairly predictable – the “rectangle”, “ellipse”, “freehand” (slow), “flow selection” (magic wand) and the selection brush tools. I was very impressed with the minimal effort required to refine the selection. For example, I expected more effort to erase the hair selected in the portrait, but all I had to do was press the “Refine” button and paint the edges.
In addition to the basic options, the Affinity Photoshop alternative has several other powerful tools. Tone Mapping deals with merged exposures for HDR (high dynamic range) photos. However, I don’t like that it sometimes behaves a little inaccurately.
If you’re editing portraits in Affinity Photo for Windows or Mac, the Frequency Separation feature makes it easy to process parts of an image without losing their texture. The Select command splits the pixel layer into two separate layers – high and low frequency. Coloring the areas to be smoothed on each layer softens the skin (low frequency layer), while preserving texture details (high frequency layer).
Text and typography
One of the coolest features I couldn’t help but mention in my Affinity Photo review is that you can easily open PSD files from Photoshop. However, after trying out several options, I ran into some issues. When working with text in the app, you can resize, move the text window, but not edit the text itself. The app has text tools, Artistic Text, and Frame Text. The former is designed for displaying type, while the latter is needed for longer inscriptions. You have very detailed formatting with thousands of OpenType fonts at your disposal. You can manage ligatures, but you don’t get the same level of editing that Illustrator offers.
Comfortable working with a mask
In my opinion, Serif Affinity Photo offers more convenient work with masks, which act as independent layers. Adjustment layers are built in the form of presets. The history of photo processing is saved in the file itself. This means that you will easily transfer the project to someone else who will easily understand it. In fact, when I started reviewing Affinity Photo, I noticed a lot of such pleasant nuances.
Photo Merger Tool
Not all shooters can take 360-degree photos. However, with the rise of action cameras and the rise of virtual reality, this may be something you’ll want to use in the future. That’s why having a dedicated editing space means you can pan or zoom while editing your 360-degree photos. A set of powerful will also be a big help.
HDR merging allows you to bring out the best details from multiple exposures in a single photo. In Affinity Photo HDR merging you can select an unlimited number of source images and automatically align them before merging them into a single photo.
